Three routes to explore the Magnolia State

Culinary Delights Road Trip

If you’re a foodie, food connoisseur, or just love to eat, then you are in luck. Plan your Mississippi road trip according to the Mississippi Seafood Trail, which features “360 miles of Mississippi’s best restaurants serving genuine Gulf seafood.” Every day, the website features specials from 52 restaurants along the trail and will guide you to the finest dining anywhere. The only tough choice you’ll have to make is where to go first, but if you follow this guide, you know you’ll never go wrong. Make it a fun weekend of delicious eats with the family or that special someone. Take a road trip or two, and try out a few of these restaurants each weekend. It might take you a while to work through the list, but most people don’t mind this type of work.

Old South Sojourn

Feeling stressed at work? Having a horrible week? Or maybe you just want to get away to spend some time with your sweetie. Whatever your reason, an Old South sojourn is always a good idea. Book your stay at one of the charming and welcoming bed and breakfast inns in Natchez or Vicksburg, and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back to a much simpler time and place.

In Natchez, enjoy the hospitality, history, and beauty of B&Bs such as the Monmouth Historic Inn, with its exquisite gardens, or the Dunleith Historic Inn, which serves up mouthwatering Southern fare at The Castle Restaurant (located in the property’s original carriage house built in the 1790s). If you’re a history buff, make plans to stay at one of the historic homes that have been turned into charming B&Bs in Vicksburg, and then tour the battlegrounds of the National Military Park. Better yet, check the city’s calendar to plan your visit during a Civil War event. Round out your trip with a variety of tours, museums, art galleries, shopping, casinos, and outdoor activities offered in each of these picturesque locales.

Musical Pilgrimage

Although you might be paying homage to the blues, you sure won’t be feeling them when you take a pilgrimage into the heart and soul of American music along the Mississippi Blues Trail. For the total Delta experience, book your stay at one of the unique lodging choices in Clarksdale, such as the trendy vacation rental Delta Digs, the Loft at the Hopson Plantation, or at the Five and Dime Lofts in the heart of downtown. Then make your way to the Crossroads (and fall down on your knees if you feel the need), but definitely don’t miss out on this excellent photo op. Learn more about the music that is as much a part of the region as the muddy waters of the Mighty Mississippi at the Delta Blues Museum. Enjoy some of the finest barbeque around, and then finish your evening up at the Ground Zero Night Club, where you will be treated to the grittiest, most heart-wrenching blues you’ll ever hear. Plan your weekend road trip around the Blues Trail, and pay tribute to some of the most talented performers that have called this great state home.
