In Search of the Charleston Hole in the Wall

Charleston is home to some of the best dive bars and music venues in the country, but no one seems to know that.
Discover the Charleston hole in the wall, representing great little dive bars and music venues throughout the city

The words “dive-bar” and Charleston should never be uttered in the same sentence, unless of course, you have lived it. I can say this because it took me nearly three months to find this magical place that so few know as a Charleston hole in the wall.

History and Rock and Roll

When people think of musical cities, most tend to lean towards places like Nashville and New Orleans, and for very good reason. True, Charleston has some of the best beaches and real estate in the country, but it is also home to some of the best dive bars and music venues that only the locals know about. These lesser-known Holy City hot spots are definitely worth a visit.

Charleston’s Little Hidden Gem

Chico Feo is your favorite bar you haven’t been too . . . yet. Live music greets you nearly every day of the week, and daily specials, including tacos with homemade corn tortillas and unique, Caribbean-inspired dishes, are featured on their seasonally changing menu. Dogs are more than welcome (actually encouraged), and Chico Feo is even family friendly too. You are just steps away from the sandy shores of the Atlantic, and the band always plays, even if a few rain showers come out to greet us. Overall, it is a simple place specializing in fresh, local food and great music. If you enjoy drama, rude crowds, and other typical beach bar behavior, then you need not apply.

Drum Circles, anyone?

On Folly Road, approximately four miles from the white sands of Folly Beach, stands a house unlike any others on said road. Upon pulling up or passing by, you may notice that the house sits on nearly an acre, housing a stage, outdoor seating, and a full service bar, all viewable from the road. The house itself is a nice country home with a large front porch and shade trees that invite you in. The building I describe to you is the Brick House Coastal Kitchen & Bar. Now, curiosity alone of what lies beyond the tall fence and the old porch will drag you in, but I give you a different agenda. This Charleston hole in the wall houses some of the best music you will find in the city. From drum circles every Tuesday night, to African dance music, to live blue grass bands on the weekend, there is no better outdoor music venue than the Brick House. Not to mention, the menu boasts some of the best Southern dishes in the city! Enjoy your banjo with a some fresh local seafood, and call it a night!
