Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar

Located in the historic Grove Arcade in Asheville, NC, the Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar is where my two favorite things come together.

It’s true. The great Ernest Hemingway once said that you should, “Write drunk; edit sober.” While I may not be one to frequently over-imbibe, I *do* enjoy a glass of wine on occasion. Couple that lovely glass of chilled Moscato with the literary classics, and I may just never go home. So where does one go to cozy up to their favorite novel with a glass of vino in public? Why, at the Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar in Asheville, NC of course!

Books by the thousands

Perhaps what I love best about the Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar is that there are very few brand new books. Nearly 100% of their selection (of over 20,000 books) has been pre-owned. You’ll find that Asheville is a very green city that focuses on sustainable living and recycling. That bleeds over into every aspect of life, including book-buying. I’ve never minded used-books … there’s something about wondering who loved this book before it fell into my hands. That sort of introspective thinking is absolutely cultivated in an environment like the Battery Park Book Exchange. Perhaps it’s the wine.

There’s food, too!

If you don’t want to start your day with wine (or even if you want to but realize you probably shouldn’t), then take note that the BPBX opens mid-morning to serve coffee and pastries. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, and yes, you’re even allowed to take books outside with you while you enjoy your breakfast, lunch, or late-night snack. Come together with friends (both real and fictional) around a cheese tray, their famous trout dip, or a local dessert. Four-legged friends are welcome as well and may partake of their own special refreshments (for free!).

Battery Park’s book selection is constantly changing, so although they specialize in books about North Carolina, the Civil War, American History, and the American South, you will still find a varied selection of fiction and non-fiction. I love that you never know what treasure you might find.
