Summertime Camping in Virginia

Enjoy camping in Virginia at these family-friendly campsites on the coast

The Best the Virginia Coast Has to Offer

There’s something about pitching a tent in the warm summer air and falling asleep under a sky full of lightning bugs—especially when it comes to camping in Virginia.

Spanning from mountains in the west to sandy shores in the east, the diversity of the Virginia landscape makes it a great place for an array of family activities. Because it is summertime and many people are looking for family time in the sun and sand, let’s focus on the beautiful Virginia coast and the unique beach campgrounds you’ll find there.

First Landing State Park is in Cape Henry on the Chesapeake Bay. If your family wants an inexpensive, low-key, and peaceful camping trip, this is a good place to try. Tucked away off the main road with miles of trails for hiking and biking, and with the Chesapeake Bay Beach walking distance away, there are plenty of things to do that will have you worn out by the time you retire to your cabin or tent. There are also nearby attractions like the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center and the Cape Henry Lighthouse for some time away from the site. You can brush up on a bit of history during your stay as well—First Landing is the spot the colonists initially landed before making their trek to Jamestown.

For groups looking for a family-friendly atmosphere, Virginia Beach KOA is a good option. Scenic views coupled with activities galore makes it a spot both parents and children can enjoy (four-legged friends too!). Sit back by the pool, play in the arcade, or take a ride on the trolley to and from VA beach to brave the ocean waves. It is a bit pricier than other sites, but time spent here will be packed with fun.

Kiptopeke State Park is located on the opposite side of the Chesapeake Bay, at the southern tip of the Eastern Shore. Having to cross the bridge makes it a longer drive, but the attractions it has to offer make it worth the extra miles. Rentable sites range from RV and tent to lodges and yurts (part-cabin and part-tent), so there is something suitable for everyone. There are things to do for all ages: fishing off the pier, swimming at the beach, enjoying the playground, and even attending educational nature programs. For bird watchers in your group, Kiptopeke is also known for being a migratory bird habitat, as it sits right in the middle of the Atlantic Flyline.

Another kid-friendly campground is the Holiday Trav-L-Park. Whether you bring a camper or pitch a tent, all sites are within walking distance of four pools and a beachfront parking lot. Because of the size of the park, it’s a good place for multiple families to stay together to enjoy the weather and good company. If you need a break from the sun, you can partake in the daily campground events or visit some of the attractions nearby like the Norfolk Zoo and VA Beach Aquarium.

False Cape State Park is another coastal campground filled with personality. For families looking to get away from the crowds of Virginia Beach, False Cape is known as one of the last undisturbed coastal areas on the East Coast. Because of this, it is not accessible by vehicle, so be prepared for a bit of hiking, biking, or boating at the beginning of your trip! Along with no cars, primitive campgrounds line the park’s six miles of beachfront. You can see where the Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean and also visit the statue erected on the parkland with one side in Virginia and the other in North Carolina. If quality outdoor family time and being away from the hustle and bustle of the everyday sounds appealing, this may be the perfect spot.
