Walter Andersen Museum

For an inspiring day, find out about one of the Gulf Coast’s most talented artists, Walter Anderson, at the Walter Anderson Museum in Ocean Springs. Anderson’s murals are vibrant and creative, depicting life along the Gulf Coast and many of its inhabitants. Born in New Orleans, Anderson was educated at the Parsons Institute of Design in New York and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and earned a scholarship to study abroad. While in Europe, Anderson was enchanted by the cave art he observed in France, and that influence makes a strong appearance in all of his work. Throughout his life, Anderson battled depression and sought an escape through his art. Anderson sought peace and solitude through his work and trips to the tranquil environment of Horn Island where he spent most of the last 18 years of his life is featured in a majority of his work. These rare treasures were saved by chance and should be cherished for their beauty and their contribution to the artist community along the Gulf Coast.

Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art

The Gulf Coast has been blessed with so many talented artists. Maybe it has something to do with the beautiful landscape or the freedom to express oneself that thrives in this vacation destination. One of the most creative and innovative artists arose from tragedy and despair to bring some of the most unique and beautiful creations in pottery. The sad part of the story is that George Ohr wasn’t truly appreciated during his own time. The 1800s and early 1900s just weren’t ready for this avant-garde artist and his new approach to pottery. Ohr labeled himself as the “Mad Potter of Biloxi” and is credited with leading the modernist artistic movement by expressing his creative style in some very unique and gorgeous creations. The mission of the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art is to honor the legacy of Ohr and celebrate the vivid artist community along the Gulf Coast. Take in some of Ohr’s creations and be treated to some very talented and inspiring visiting exhibits. There is always a multitude of art to explore, and you’re always invited to make a little art or pottery of your own to treasure as a reminder of your fun summer day spent exploring the arts.
