Grab your hats and place your bets, the Kentucky Derby is upon us! Few things are more Southern than seersucker, bow ties, pastels, and big floppy hats. If you’re like us, the mere mention of Derby attire conjures up a craving for that classic Derby cocktail. Time for our favorite Mint Julep recipe! Whether you’re visiting us down south or celebrating from home, we’ve got you covered!
1 ounce club soda
1/2 oz simple syrup (1 part water, 1 part sugar heated until sugar is dissolved, then cooled)
5-8 mint leaves
2 tablespoons (3 ounces) high-quality whiskey
2 cups crushed ice
In a drink mixer, stir together club soda and simple syrup. Add half of the mint leaves and, using a muddler (or the end of a large spoon), gently and slightly press leaves into the liquid (don’t completely crush leaves, just press them momentarily to release their flavor). Add the whiskey. Fill a cup with crushed ice and stir (traditionally, these cocktails are served in a silver goblet, but a glass will work just fine). Fill with cocktail mixture, garnish with remaining mint sprigs, and insert short straw. Sip and enjoy!
Hint: If you use a straw, Mint Julep connoisseurs recommend keeping it short so that your nose gets as close to that minty goodness as possible, increasing the pleasure of each sip!
