The world’s only maritime museum dedicated to the historical, cultural, and economic significance of the Gulf is only a short day trip from Gulf Shores or Orange Beach!
GulfQuest is best described as Mobile’s love letter to the Gulf of Mexico. It’s situated on the river downtown and even houses a container ship. This skyline-enhancing venue is one of the only interactive maritime museums in the United States.
There are 90 exhibits including hands-on activities, displays, and simulators; traveling exhibitions will broaden your experience. Check out a glass bottom boat, steer sailboats around a simulated Gulf Coast bay, and catch drool-worthy views of Mobile’s waterfront on the observation deck. Play games, check out tools of the trade, and even listen to a ghost story (no, not a scary story; a tale told by ghostly images. You know we Southerners love our ghosts). Junior mariners (kids 2-8) will love the children’s museum-like atmosphere of the play area featuring a ship, props, and costumes (go ahead, teach them to be pirates and shout “aye aye matey!”).
There are multiple theaters throughout the museum! In the GulfQuest Theater, check out “The Gulf Coast: A Place Like No Other” which explores different aspects of history, culture, and the impacts of recent events like Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill. Meanwhile, the Discovery Hull Theater shows “Port of Victory,” which tells the story of the Port of Mobile during World War II (hello sound, lighting, and fog effects!). Take the Helm Theater allows guests to – you guessed it – take the helm, and play captain navigating vessels through the waterways that surround Mobile; while the Ocean Planet Theater shows real satellite data (and other images) of our unique water-filled planet.
Kids, adults, and even landlubbers will enjoy this unique museum. This is the perfect spot to take the family for the day, for field trips, and even for overnight camp-ins! Add GulfQuest to your Alabama Gulf Coast vacation itinerary. Adventures aweigh!
